Literacy and language in global and local settings: New directions for
research and teaching

First announcement

The conference will aim to
· bring together a group of established and emerging scholars from
around the world
· focus on the changing literacy practices of con-temporary times
· have an interdisciplinary focus
· focus on cutting-edge work in the distinct and emerging fields of
language and literacy research that make up literacy studies, as well as
numeracy studies

There will be a blend of invited keynote addresses, less formal working
panels centred on core concerns, and discussion of work in progress and
planning. The conference will be organised on the basis of core thematic
sites and intersecting issues:
Themes
· Academic literacies · Adult education and literacy
· Children’s early learning · Literacies in
multilingual settings
· Local literacies · Multi-modal and
multi-media
     communication
· On-line literacies · Policy studies and
development
     studies
· School and out-of-school literacies · Workplace literacies

Issues
· The politics and practices of globalisation as they impact on
literacy in educational and work contexts;
· Standardised provision and assessment in relation to situated
literacy practice;
· Literacy and social development in national and local contexts;
· The relationships of literacy and numeracy practices to their
related knowledge bases
· Literacy- and language-teaching in multi-lingual and multi-cultural
contexts;
· International networking of literacy researchers: challenges and
constraints.
Papers offered and indications of interest
Please send indications of interest and possible titles of papers offered
to the address below.
Organisation
The conference will be co-hosted by the Scientific Commission on Literacy
of International Association of Applied Linguists (AILA) and the University
of Cape Town, with participation from ALNARC (Adult Literacy and Numeracy
Australian Research Consortium), RAPAL (Research and Practice in Adult
Literacy in the UK) and others, including colleagues in South America
(Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem, Unicamp, Campinas, Brazil) and
colleagues North America.

Fees
Early bird $150 Thereafter $175
Students/sponsored $100 Daily rate $40

Sponsorship of delegates from Australia, the UK and some other regions will
be by way of bursaries from such bodies as ALNARC and BALA, and sponsorship
for delegates from Africa, Asia and South America will be sought from a
host of agencies, including UNESCO, UNICEF, the Association for the
Development of Education in Africa, SIDA, USAID, ODA and others.

Provisional programmes will be posted on the web-site (link at

distributed at the conference.
