affordances

I am desperately behind, Martin, as the date of this note indicates. Thanks
for the posting on affordances.

The reason Don resisted the idea for so long is that as an information
processing theorist he relied heavily on ideas of representation that
people like Gerry Balzano, influenced by Gibson, disagreed with, arguing
that structure in the environment/interaction was being snuck into the
head making for theorizing that was misguided.

Isn't the process of design one of creating affordances (and learning
what you didn't understand because of the unitended consequences of
the implementation!)? What did you folks decide in the parallel once
upon a time discussion?
