NCTE Assembly for Research Midwinter Conference*
Preparing Language Arts Teachers for the 21st Century:
Research, Practice & Policy

February 25-27, 2000
Seattle, Washington

How do teachers learn to teach Language Arts across their careers? What=20
makes for effective preservice teacher education? What enables beginning=20
teachers to continue to grow and to learn as they face new=20
challenges? What roles do on-going professional development, mentoring=20
programs, and support systems play in the development of teachers? How do=

policies related to standards, assessment, and teacher preparation=20
influence the quality and practice of teachers? What challenges do teacher=
=20
educators and teachers face in preparing to teach in the 21st century?

These and other questions will frame our Midwinter Conference for=20
2000. Join us for 3 days of stimulating research presentations, round=20
table discussions, panels, and informal conversation. This conference is=20
specifically designed for university and school-based researchers=20
interested in K-12 language arts/literacy, graduate students, and others=20
interested in preparation and continuing development of language=20
arts/literacy teachers. The conference provides a small, friendly forum=20
for collegial exchange and learning. We welcome new members to join us as=
=20
we discuss an issue that has captured the nation=92s attention and spurred=
=20
intense debates.

Take this opportunity to explore Seattle! We offer a wealth of culture,=20
cuisine, and coffee. A cosmopolitan city in the beautiful Northwest,=20

teachers). In-progress work is welcome. Consider this an opportunity to=20
share questions, issues or research problems about specific projects.

Proposals (2 single-spaced page limit) should address the following:

How the research will contribute to the conference conversation
