BTW,

There is a useful text that treats what I think is an important issue w.r.t.=
schooling and cognitive development -- assessment -- related to=
constructed response, performance testing, authentic and portfolio=
assessment. I'd find it handy to pile these terms on what I know is=
already a full plate, as these are things that someone interested in=
schooling and development will eventually face. Authentic assessment, when=
taken seriously, is an attempt to create a setting similar to a complex one=
that you would find outside of the context of schooling, and pains are=
taken to examine the generative, or constructed, aspects of performance. =
The text is 'construction versus choice in cognitive measurement', bennet=
and ward eds. lawrence erlbaum, 1993.
