It took many struggles over many years to guarantee that working people and
those who would not be able to have any education because of their class
or ethnic/racial background would be guaranteed a free education. If there
is something wrong with the schools now, it is once again up to the people
to fight for what they want to see in their schools, to fight for decent
financial support from the federal government as well as local governments,
etc. I wonder how many of the people in the discussion about this issue
have been engaged in any local struggles in regard to school boards,
budgets, collaboration with teachers and other unions, as well as in the
struggle against the militarist/global industrial take over of the federal
budget.

In New York, for example, we are carrying on a campaign to make sure that
people vote for their school boards on May 18 on the basis of the
candidate's program for decent education, etc. If any one wants
information about the place to vote in New York City and background
information on the people who are running, please write me. Ethel Tobach
