I can't help myself:

mandate (Latin) = man(hand) date(to give - pronounced "dahtay") = "to give
hand".

In a recent discussion regarding polticians' proclivities in claiming a
"mandate" for this or that agenda, someone noted that a mandate was merely
another way of saying they were "palming off" the public, to put it politely.
