CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The conference organizers have been receiving e-mail inquiries for
further information on the conference, "Women Transforming the
Public." Here is an expanded version of the call for paper.
Please note that the deadline has been extended to February 2, 1999, to
accommodate requests from international scholars and activists.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Women's Studies Program, together with the Interdisciplinary
Humanities Center at the University of California, Santa
Barbara, announces a conference which will examine the social,
political, cultural and economic progress women have made in the United
States and in other countries during the twentieth century. This event
will bring together American and international women working in diverse
social domains: government, the civil service, non-governmental
organizations, research and policy institutes, grass-roots and community
organizations, academia and the fields of cultural production and mass
media.

The conference committee is currently accepting proposals for papers, full
panels or workshops with 3 to 4 participants. Each proposal should
include:

1) a cover page indicating the title of the presentation, the
participant's name and affiliation, mailing address, phone number, and
e-mail address. If you are proposing a panel or workshop, include the
preceding information for each participant anad identify who the primary
contact is, summarizing its focus and rationale. If you are submitting a
single paper, indicate which topic(s) the presentation would be most
appropriate for.

2) Three copies of each abstract (limit one-page/500 words)

Submissions must be postmarked by February 2, 1999. The conference
committee will review and respond to all proposals by February 15 1999.

box lunch and morning refreshments) Conference dinner (optional) $15.00

Conference rates have been confirmed for the Best Western South Coast Inn
(805-967-3200), 5620 Calle Real, Goleta. They provide shuttle service from
the airport, which is about 10 minutes away. Rates are $72 (Sun-Thur) and
$85 (Fri. & Sat), for two queen beds. Continental breakfast is included.
Rollaway bed charge is $10.
