"The Quechua-speaking Indians of the Andes look at time
differently from
the way we do. We tend to view the past as behind us and the
future as
ahead, as in "let us go forward into the future." The Quechua,
more
logically perhaps, recognize the past as what is already known,
so it's
right in front of you. The future is behind your back becuase
it's what
you can't see, unless you catch a glimpse of it out of the corner
of your
eye, over your shoulder. Our whole conceptuual framework is based
on a
metaphor. A good writer can turn your head around. "
