In a recent newspaper series it turned out that grades across the
University of Arizona were surprisingly high. Professional schools have
always had high proportions of A's and B's for a variety of good reasons
but high grades in the social and physical sciences etc. were somewhat
surprising. My own hunch is that grades have gone up where there is a
system for students to grade their professors and those ratings are used
in promotion, tenure and salary decisions. What that does of course is
equalize to some extent the power of teachers and students.
