One strand of my work focuses on the construction of intersubjectivity in
children's pretend play (e.g., house-play) and problem-solving (e.g.,
classifying pictures) interactions with their peers and with adults. A
second and a related strand of work focuses on the role of activity and
culture in the construction of intersubjectivity in parent-child and peer
interaction. Some examples of this line of work will appear this Spring in
a book "Children's engagement in the world: Sociocultural perspectives.
Cambridge" that I edited. Finally, I have recently begun to explore the
role of one's own personal history in his/her research and practice, using
my own Armenian/Turkish/Gay/U.S identity as a paradigm case.
In addition to my research and teaching responsiblities, I direct a teacher
education program in early childhood education here at the University of
Illinois at Chicago. Artin Goncu
