I appreciate the interesting references to work on Giddens that people
have offered, but the original question stands: Is there a serious
discussion of Giddens by people developing cultural-historical/
sociocultural theories of human nature? I believe there are a variety
of relatively brief gestures and some discussion, but no such extended
treatment.

Without checking, I believe you can find references in Lave, Engestrom,
and Cole. The core idea that I find compatible with my own thinking
is the duality of structure such that structures are both enabling
and constraining (the discussion of this in Cultural Psychology is
part of one on the "supraindividual envelope of development" a metaphor
which can be shreded no doubt; there is a gesture to Bordieu in the
same locale).

A serious treatment of the topic would almost certainly be enlightening.
