NSF minority fellowships

MINORITY POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS & SUPPORTING ACTIVITIES -
NSF

SPONSOR: NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION

PURPOSE: To increase the number of research scientists from
underrepresented minority groups, thereby contributing to the future
vitality of the Nation's scientific enterprise

DEADLINE: 12/04/98

SUMMARY: The Directorates for Biological Sciences (BIO) and Social,
Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) of the National Science
Foundation (NSF) announce a program of Minority Postdoctoral Research
Fellowships and related supporting activities. The term "minority"
as used in this announcement refers to those ethnic groups that are
significantly underrepresented at advanced levels of science and
engineering in the U.S., i.e., Native Americans (including American
Indians and Alaskan Natives), Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Pacific
Islanders. This program is an effort by the NSF to increase the
number of research scientists from underrepresented minority groups,
thereby contributing to the future vitality of the Nation's
scientific enterprise. Approximately twelve fellowships are awarded
each year. The deadline for submission of fellowship applications is
the first Friday in December annually. Graduate Student Travel Award
applications may be submitted up to 3 months before the proposed
travel.

The goal of the program is to prepare minority scientists for
positions of scientific leadership in academia and industry. To
attain this goal, the program provides opportunities for postdoctoral
training of the highest quality to recent minority Ph.D.s.

GRANTS - SBC FOUNDATION

SPONSOR: SBC FOUNDATION

PURPOSE: To provide funding for the advancement of education and the
use of information technology

DEADLINE: Open

SUMMARY: As the leading provider of information technologies and
services in the Southwest and as one of the leading providers
nationally, SBC Communications Inc. and its Southwestern Bell,
Pacific Bell, Nevada Bell and CellularOne subsidiaries are involved
every day in creating the communication links which keep our society
functioning smoothly.

We recognize, however, that our responsibility to the community
doesn't end there. We also have an obligation to the quality of life
nationally and in the communities where we operate, including San
Antonio, Texas, our headquarters city.

The SBC Foundation was formed in 1984 with that responsibility in
mind. As a private foundation, it receives its funds from SBC
Communications Inc. and its affiliated companies to support two major
objectives:

--To encourage innovative programs which promote collaboration and
volunteerism; provide services directly to those in need; have the
potential to multiply the effect of the contributed dollar; and
encourage public discussion of key issues; and

--To help find solutions for those social issues the Foundation has
identified as areas of concern nationally and in the communities
served by SBC Communications Inc. and its subsidiaries.
