Dear Chat-ers and Xmca's;

This post is to update you on our SIG plans for Montreal and encourage a
few more submissions for participation in the program.
>
>We don't have enough submissions now for roundtable session(s) which are
>FREE to us.
If you are interested in presenting a roundtable on CHAT themes, now is the
time to send an abstract and a completed AERA proposal form.

In sum, We have received some proposals that are now under review but
mostly, our
sessions in Montreal will center on
Session 1. Bilingualism from a CHAT perspective, - which will pick up from
where
>Vera's chapter "The Road top competence in an alien land: a Vygotskyan
>perspective on bilingualism" left off. The Bilingual session is being set
up with Luis making calls for a panel, etc and
>Vera has agreed to serve as Discussant, We need Bruce Bain's email, ph etc,

Session 2. Methodological issues in CHAT Research and Feminism - I have
just finished reviewing (for MCA) Comparisons in Human Development:
Understanding Time in Context. Edited by J. Tudge, M. J. Shanahan and J.
Valsiner, an outstanding book and a classic manual for developmental
researchers. Perhaps some aspect of it would be appropriate for this
session. The Method/feminism session seems to be on with Judy Diamondstone,
Carolyn, Vera & Eugene bringing it along. Carolyn Panofsky is organizing
this session and she is welcoming participants for that session. Needs to
be quickly done..
>
Session 3a. Psychotherapy and Mental Health from a CHAT perspective
(Carl Ratner, and Ole Drier, (whom we met in Aarhus, a Danish colleague who
practices CHAT in a mental
>health center and wrote a book about it), both had to cancel their
participation in a session concerning CHAT and Mental health/PsychoTherapy.
This leaves Lois
>Holzman, G. Arias from Cuba who also practices CHAT in a Univ, community
>outreach center, and me, so we will need more participation and help to
>pull this one off.
>If any one is interested in this topic or in participating in the session,
contact me.

>
>or 3b. A sampler of CHAT related research on various topics in education and
>development. This would be our 3rd paper session if any on the above 3
fails to converge..If the above session flies, then submissions here become
part of the roundtables after review)

>4. Vera is planning a program highlite for the business meeting / invited
session.

5. We are hoping to have at least one Roundtables session with 4-5 papers.
There is also the possibility to co-sponsor some of the above, so there may
be more room possibly.

NOTE
I wonder if anyone is interested in pursuing a discussion on #'s 2 and/or 3a?

>So, There may still be room in the program to add you for paper or
roundtable sessions if you submit a
>proposal right away.
>
>Since I am taking the lead on organizing # 3, I would like to invite
>commentaries, suggestions and discussion of that topic, which may be
>regarded as one that examines general questions such as;
>What is the connection between CHAT and counseling/therapy as a cultural
>practice.?
>What does CHAT have to offer counseling and related fields? and at which
level(s)
>(i.e.policy, the training of therapists, counseling/clinical
>psychologists, social workers and other mental health professionals, etc..)??

>Since LSV and AL broke from psychoanalysis, very little has been noted in
>the literature connecting these areas, except for C. Ratner's book a while
>back, which dealt with the issue from mostly a socio-genetic angle.
Most of CHAT/lsv work has been focused on education, developmental psych,
anthropology yet
>counseling, as a special type of educational activity, has not been
>addressed much thus far. Perhaps for some very good reasons. One level
>concerns the social construction of psychopathologies, power relations etc,
>which is a topic we saw a while back on xmca with re. to ADHD., and more
>recently the area of giftedness...
>At another level, the therapist as a more advanced other, scaffolds,
works in the zpd & regulates the consciousness of the client etc,
representing yet
>another issue where the CHAT model has remained relatively silent in that
>area (mental health ..fields).
>(If you would like to continue this thread, put chat/psychotherapy on the
subject line)

>I/we would appreciate any leads, comments on the above topic.

>Please rush any paper/roundtable proposals by August 30.
Also, we still need
>reviewers.
