More on Memorial Day

I have been following bits and pieces of the Memorial Day discussion and it
struck me that my reaction to the original posting ("remember") was quite
different from anything I have read. I attended a Quaker elementary and
high school in Philadelphia, USA and, as I recall, never had the day off
from school for Memorial Day until 12th grade. I always assumed that this
was because Quakers are pacifists so they didn't observe a holiday that
could be seen as "supporting" war. On the other hand, maybe they just
wanted us to have more days of schooling....I don't know.

In any case, my reaction to the original posting was to "remember" that
humans have a history of violence and conflict toward each other and that
violence, by itself, never provides a lasting solution to conflicts. I
thought about the sorrow that war brings whenever and wherever it occurs.
Just my 2 cents worth.....
