Keith,
Nardi's book is a good reference. I'll try to take a look at your
review.
Looking at your webpage I've noted that "play" and
"conversations" play a crucial role in your work. That is fascinating.
Having a B.S. in Computer Science, what do you think about "play"
in this context, and how this concept could be integrated not only in CS
education but also in its methodology?
It is my opinion that most students and professionals do play with
software, although most theories, methodologies, policies, and even
hardware, try to restrict that to a maximum. I'm not only talking about
playing games, but playing with language (including programming
languages).
There is a Brazilian poet called Manoel de Barros who wrote:
"Poetry is the art of making toys with words" [the translation is
mine and I do not have the original]
As a musician, besides your scientific interests, you would
probably like that too. In northeast Brazil there is a kind of contest in
which to singers tell stories in a conversation/debate genre. They play,
sing, tease, improvise, ... when they are "debating" for an audience.
Thanks for the reference,
Luiz
