When I re-read my mail as it post to the list, I am so acutely
aware that I am

continuing to respond to my current "situation," and so
am projecting, considerably, to the list, instead of to the "situation: -
like, throwing the ball to first base
'cause you're scared to pitch to the batter...

anyhow. another great book (I *can't* help it) is

"Bold In Her Breeches" which is a cultural/historical/feminist
analysis of women pirates/cross-dressing women who sailed
& or captained "pirate" ships from the 11th century or so, to present day.

As an example of what kinds of work are produced within
cultural/historical/feminist research, it is a very very smart book.

I'll post the author & reference soon. For now, I have
a situation to deal with. :-)
