Re: NUD*IST anyone?

I have copies of both NUD*IST and Atlas-ti--both for a Windows
environment. I can't say I know either of them yet. I've begun
using the tutorials for both. NUD*IST seems more straight-forward and
familiar to a social science audience (the tutorial is a group interview
transcript). Atlas-ti seems more intimidating (and the manual for the
latest version has just now appeared--having been recently translated from
German by the originator). However, Atlas-ti allows one greater
flexibility and may be more powerful (I can't tell yet). One important
difference to a novice is that NUD*IST requires that you predefine your
unit of analysis using a hard page return in the source documents.
Atlas-ti allows you to define your units dynamically (as a word, turn,
utterance, you name it). The tutorial for Atlas-ti is very unfamiliar to
me (an interpretative analysis of a biblical passage)--although maybe not
to everyone on xmca.

Both programs are now being distributed in the U.S. by Sage.
