Catching up with Bill Barowy's query about authority and inquiry.
Jay's message about authority and my search for a definition of
intelligence a few days ago reminded me that Dewey has much to say about
the difference between individual authority and the collective authority
that comes from free inquiry. I am thinking especially of *Experience and
Education*. He has some nice distinctions between the proper use of
authority (broad based expertise) to guide inquiry and the improper use of
narrow minding, strong-arming that curtails inquiry.
