My miscue research has always been both quantitative and qualitative. As
in all language research that studies language transactions and real texts
it produces huge quantities of data. But uses a strong theoretical
prospective involving a model of the reading process which is where it
becomes qualititative. The each bit of data is qualitatively analysed in
how it
reflects the process of reading and its ultimate effect on comprehension.

Further I came to realize that I am a scientific realist: I look not for
cause-effect relationships as most quantitative researchers do through
corelational analyses. I look for underlying structures and processes that
produce the data in particular real world contexts. The facts my
research produces are viewed as theory based and my understanding of the
reality of reading always reveals other layers of reality beneath what I
have uncovered.
