Jay and all,

I happen to have the cites for the articles Ken Goodman referred to last
week. They were:

Time - October 27, 1997, pp. 78-81
Newsweek - October 27, 1997, pp. 56-64
Atlantic - http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/97nov/read.htm
(I don't have the USNews one.)

Overall, it was a rough week with the press, particularly if you add the
Times and Examiner pieces about the Public Agenda "educrat" story - and
even the NY Post story about the "porno poem" - all of which add up to a
visible press attack on education the week before elections (there was a
bond issue vote in NY State, and I'm sure other places as well) and the
week before this Reading Excellence act was to be voted on. By the way,
it passed the House Saturday, under of "suspension of rules" voice vote
(no voting record). I'm not one to buy into deliberate, organized
conspiracy theories, really, but this is some powerful seredipity for
people whose perspective is very different from my own.
