As some of you know, we have been involved for some time in experiments
that mix different technically based systems of distance ed. Unfortunately,
little of this is written up formally, although we should soon have a
paper from Catherine Saulino here at UCSD who has headed a team working
with Lynda Stone at UCLA and others mixing asynchronous discussions
with face to face (via TV) distance ed among classes with identical
curricula.
What I do not know how to think about well is how to break this kind of
activity loose from the 10-18 week quarter/semester schedule. Perhaos,
as someone (Eva?) suggested, the Open U in the UK has a better handle
on this.
