Like Michael Erikson, I have found the discussion of zoped's both
illuminating and somewhat disconcerting in so far as people seem to
push it to be so all-inclusive that it has to collapse. Eugene's
message indicates some of the tensions that have been discussed in
the past few years, and others have made useful suggestions for the
kinds of complications that need to be added to extend the concept
in useful ways. As a result, I am more aware of the boundary conditions
than I have been previously.
I am currently in the middle of reading Chris Sinha's 1989 article (thanks
to whoever suggested it!) which echoes in many ways various lines of
current discussion and I recommend it for those xmca members who have
not had a chance to see it yet (History of Human Sciences, Vol. 2,
No, 3, 1989). But this article, too, like all the work of the past
decade or so, needs re-evaluation and updating.
