I teach in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. I have
recently been involved in an ethnographic study of six children designated
as learners of ESL who are attending "regular" (anglophone)
classrooms--I've watched these kids since kindergarten--they've just
finished grade 2. I wrote "Learning ESL in Kindergarten: A community of
practice perspective" published in the Canadian Modern Language Review
52(4), 1996 and have a paper entitled "Breaking them up, taking them away":
Constructing ESL students in grade one" forthcoming in TESOL Quarterly. I
was previously a member of xmca but had to suspend membership because I was
too busy. I have just started a sabbatical and am looking forward to the
time to enjoy reading and responding to what I learn in this community.
