For some strange reason Shevardnadze's comment reminds me of the now rather
outmoded cyclic view of history. In the first (peasant) stage of
development, usually following a cultural catastrophe (a 'recycling'), the
values that arise to overwhelm all others are blood-line and land. Such
notions aside, it is interesting that a supposed cosmopolitan sophisticate
espouses these qualia.

Ah well, back to the job hunt.
