That's funny. From hearing the talk (haven't read the whole paper yet), I
formed the impression that the three protagonists were all boys. I suppose
her eventual role of fading away confirms my stereotype-laden
impression/sense of the novel. I actually went through a phase--months if
not years--when I simply could not go to another movie about fantastic
mentor teacher & pupils or fathers & sons, and even got really annoyed when
_Star Trek_ rolled out the elder male - younger male theme in three
consecutive episodes (more recently, I saw _My father's glory_ and loved
it). And this makes me reflect on the notion of disruption as development.
I cannot put it into words, but my acute discomfort with the constant
absence of my life on screen disrupted something. Just ... not very
spectacularly.

I've been reflecting also about the sort of positive-negative polarities in
Ana's post on trust, and the thought that keeps circling in my head is that
life is full of ambivalences.

That's as clear as it gets just now.
