Angel's meta-comment on researchers as 2-dimensional ants in
the 3-dimensional maze of data-and-reflexivity (very apt, though
I'd put the dimensions a bit higher!) proposes systematicity and
social commitment as saving guidethreads. I suppose I'd count both
of these as forms of Hope: our faith in meaning-making, in construing
pattern and perhaps even generalization (a particular sort of usefulness
of pattern) in the tangle of uniquenesses that data should be; and our
hope that the sense we can make in the midst of the tangle can help
others to untangle knots that bind/blind them to ways out/on. Kind of
beings we are, _homo hopeful_, spirantes, sperantes. JAY.
