You also noted that the researcher has to be willing to teach with
the teacher. Literally? I myself am not qualified to demonstrate
teaching to an experienced teacher. But I can help someone to follow
their own questions and to look at their own practices. That's how
I see my role insofar as I work directly with teachers. Any comments
or critique you have to offer on that stance would be welcome.

I enjoyed reading Phillip's comments on Mary and Suzanne's paper. And I am
trying to figure out how to _literally_ teach teachers as part of my
research. Or students, or whoever plays the role that is traditionally
refered to as the subjects of the research. Thus my question in a past
posting

of how and why research can/should be contextual rather than generalizable,
participatory rather than Ttrue experimental,U and personal rather than
objective.

I would like to hear more about how others view research as teaching. I want
to challenge the belief in the purpose of research as adding to a body of
knowledge. Research can (and I will say--should) benefit those who are being
studied. Why shouldn't my research conclusions include the responses of the
subjects to the initial results? What arguments could be made for and/or
against such a scheme?

I also want to respond to Judy's comment:

It is wonderful to participate on a list where oldtimers
explicitly welcome and encourage new voices, as Eva and Gordon
did in their resposne to Katherine and as another oldtimer did
for me.

First of thanx to those who encouraged me to speak. In a previous list serve,
I made a point using a story about a personal experience and no one
responded. A day or so later, another participant made the same point using
formal logic and formal vocabulary. His comment generated much enthusiastic
discussion. Needless to say, I soon unsubscribed.
