A quick suggestion to check on critical discussions of this book. I apologise
for raising a query without having time now (because of semester-end
assessments) to provide references. But it might be worth doing a citation
search etc before using the descriptions.

Pentti,

The whole Section I (pp. 1-258) is called: Historical Approaches. It gives
you, among other things, classified descriptions of games as reported by
people who lived in the last century, at the turn of the century or in the
first part of the century. Most of the described plays and games happened in
New Zeland and North America. The book also contains excellent extensive
bibliographies for other sources on historical accounts of games and
children play.
