Robin's definition of "constraint" co-incides with my own.
I agree with Jay that biology/culture are the ground that let
us walk. But I agree with Robin, that they're constraining.
And I don't see the contradiction. This seems to be right in
line with the "self-organizing system view" that Jay defines:

Culture is the ground on which we walk, against which we become,
INSOFAR AS it constrains. What am I not understanding of your
argument, Jay?

Are [socio] linguistic resources not constraints
and vice versa?
