Instead of thinking of monkey semiosis as a training effect of
participating in human networks, perhaps we should try thinking
of human semiosis as a specialized, differentiated form of
monkey semiosis in the wild: going verbal as a form of going
bananas! the continuities tell me things about people I didn't
see before; the discontinuities tell me things I'm supposed to
believe about people, have been long believed by some cultures,
and have, in my jaundiced view, unanalyzed and suspect socio-
political functions. JAY.
