A lot of us are still out here, Mike, but, like you, buried in
work, some of it by choice, some of it trying to hold together
a higher education system being systematically starved of
resources (esp public institutions).

I think our fluctuations are random and seasonal, but I'm very
happy for initiatives. I will certainly butt in now and again,
and try to find time to offer some comments on the Chicago
(applied linguistics) and New York (upcoming, education research)
meetings.

I have heard a few people comment, and I agree, that our summer
hiatus last year may have contributed to siphoning momentum from
our former habits of regular participation -- even though I know
there were good reasons for it and summer has been mostly a slow
season for us anyway.

For many of us, this list is an intelletual home-away-from-home,
and I'm sure there are enough of us who feel this way to keep
these home fires glowing warmly (and not flaming too hotly) --
or whatever alternate metaphor feels good to those of you not
coping with the last grumpy gasps of snowbelt winter.

With many thanks always to Mike for building the house, and working
to keep it in good repair,

JAY.
