Hi Keith,
I was thinking about a metaphor for guided improvisation, and the
situation which most comes to mind is a cadenza played by a solo
instrument during a concerto, (an orchestral piece designed for
a solo instrument with the orchestra as accompaniment). The
conductor usually continues to conduct during this part, but
he/she is letting the soloist guide the cadenza while providing
a visual cue to the rest of the orchestra based on the soloist's
direction. Anyway, I thought would toss this out as a musical
metaphor.
