Mike,
The two meanings of culture and classrooms that you mentioned in your
note from Dec 23: as interpersonally created in a community over time and
as representing the communities of students and teachers--are addressed
in several chapters of a book entitled "Minority Education" and edited by
Cathy Jordan and Evelyn Jacob (1993?). Chapters by Ogbu, Erickson, and
D'Amato not only address the interaction between those two meanings of
culture in the classroom but also address differences among the authors
on this topic. Other chapters in the book also deal with this important
issue.
