Re: How do YOU read?

I find out more about how I read when I try to analyze how others read my
work. For instance, I read my students' work first to get a some holistic
sense of what they are trying to do. I look at the organizational
structure at this "big picture" level and then I return to the writing to
see if the parts support or distract from what I perceive are my students'
intentions. When I am reading to enrich my understanding of something, I
try to re-inact the steps of the writer. I try to fit every piece of the
writing together in a sequential way - so not to miss anything that might
effect my univocal interpretation.

When others read my thesis drafts I get different responses. Some read
all of it for a holistic sense, and others read it sequentially. I learn
more about my thinking - when I can view the different ways it effects
others - and this in turn contributes to how I re-read my own writing.
