A summer institute for Florida teachers of foreign languages and of
English as a second language is being proposed for the summers 1997 through
1999 at the Florida State University campus, with distance components being
in place between summers one and two and two and three. Certified teachers
in these two fields will be recruited to complete a masters of science in
Multilingual/Multicultural Education as the final goal of the program. The
institute is proposed as one addressing the issues of language and the
construction of knowledge because the investigators believe that a
sociocultural approach is warranted in the teaching of foreign and second
languages. Unlike theories of language learning and teaching that maintain
a strong distinction between linguistic and other kinds of knowledge,
sociocultural theory eschews the notion that language is a separate faculty
of mind. Such an approach is also outcome-oriented in its intent:
authentic student achievement through assisted performance is the goal of
effective language instruction.

We are looking for advice and assistance in locating individuals who might
be interested in working with us in the teaching of this program. We wish
to help teachers learn to use the "assisted performance" model as opposed
to a model of "evaluation" along the same lines as that of Tharpe and
Galimore, Rogoff, and so on, but applied to the teaching and learning of
other languages.

Please contact either one of us: Frank Brooks: fbrooks who-is-at garnet.acns.fsu.edu
or Elizabeth Platt: eplatt who-is-at garnet.acns.fsu.edu

Many thanks!
