FRANCOISE,
I don't think anyone, certainly not Delpit, is arguing _against_
oral language -- only that an excessive cultural emphasis on it,
especially as the only legitimate form for the expression of
understanding, can harm students' balanced intellectual-semiotic
development, and discriminate against those whose cultural and
subcultural backgrounds place less emphasis on language, or
limit its uses in conjunction with other modes of action to
particular spheres or styles.

I have found, by the way, that _pointing_ works very well to
get me what I want in a food store when I do not know the name
of the item, or the language locally in use. JAY.
