RE: [xmca] net liberalism and the future of distributed discussions

I have little patience for this knee jerk contrarianism. You want a quick career boost, talk about how the Internet really isn't all that all that, and it is just as open to bad or good. Perhaps yes and perhaps no. The Internet is simply a series of servers around the world connecting local networks and sending information forward quickly and easily with phenomenal speed. It is a tool like any other human tool and it can be used for good or ill. Funny, there is so little mention how the printing press was used to distribute the protocols of Zion and movie technology was a key component of Nazi propoganda - really all propoganda. So then what does the Internet offer. It offers an empty platform where any person can come into contact with, exchange information or start an autonomous project with any other person who is connected into the world. We have little idea I think what this will mean in our lives, or where this will take us, but it is foolish to just ignore that it is there. It is the contrarians who are busy making pronouncements - all of those I read who think the Internet might have something interesting to offer such as Manuel Castells and Yochai Benkler seem to be far more circumspect, wondering where this unexpected and all consuming invention and adventure will take us.
