there's hosts of list which you can search, join etc. You can see just how
much variety there is in focussed 'groupings',  they even map the
geographic density of users of the lists overall globally and provide an
illustrated graphic. But this is email-based, so even though they provide
file-sharing in conjunction to the list serving, it's not the same
environment as the kind of blog/picture posting functions that makes
social-networking applications attractive. It starts in academia and people
come to them through academic activity in the main - or maybe professional
group communities who are relating with academics etc
