I appreciate the importance for theory of the quest to reconcile these perspectives with one another, either through incorporation of one into the other, or through synthesis. Nor do I understand the multiplicity of attempts to do so nearly as well as I need to. Still, the niggling question is whether Education would be better served by theories-with-walls that reflect the multi-paradigmatic history of psychology and that correspond in with our cultural commonsense about learning, than by theories-in-progress toward a unified psychology?

No doubt there are some differences between learning a first language and picking up "concepts" through the mishmash of most natural and most instructional dialogue. I was mainly pointing to the fact that there are also similarities. I think many models of language acquisition put too much emphasis on the "innate" elements (or in the case of Lakoff-like notions of grounded metaphor, on universals of human experience), and not enough on "induction" (which is really more like Peirce's "abduction" or like the Bayesian inference models I mentioned before).

Still one can also go too far the other way, towards a total empiricism or inductionism. Some kinds of conceptual relationships are easier to learn than others, given particular ways of living. I don't think we doubt that there has been a close co-evolution of "culture" in the narrow sense of ways of making sense of the world in a given community and the lifeways and practices of that community, bridged most obviously by the speech practices. So, yes, conceptual learning has to take into account the prior conceptual/thematic system, but also the experiential non-linguistic lifeworld. And so does language learning. In the case of first language they seem so intimately interdependent (as LSV keeps noting in T&S) as to be nearly inseparable. 

I think that one problem with many models for both conceptual and linguistic development is that they are too "pure"; the actual phenomena that are developing are simultaneously and probably inseparably linguistic-visual-perceptual-motor-multimodal-affective. My radical thesis is simply that looked at that way, one does need an additional notion of "concept".
