Post Doctoral Fellowship

The Mapping Youth Participatory Politics (MYPP) project invites
applications for a postdoctoral fellowship funded by a grant from the
MacArthur Foundation. The project is a partnership between Cathy J. Cohen
from the University of Chicago’s Department of Political Science and
Joseph Kahne of the School of Education and Civic Engagement Research
Group (CERG) at Mills College.  The work of the post doc will be guided by
both faculty members as well as by Ellen Middaugh, Associate Research
Director at CERG. The research is part of a MacArthur Foundation funded
Research Network involving faculty from multiple disciplines and campuses
and focuses on the role of digital media in youth engagement with civic

information. The majority of the work associated with this position may be
conducted in one of two research locations-- Oakland, CA or Chicago, IL.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for statistical analyses,
literature reviews, and collaborating with the research team to create
reports on a national survey of young people’s digital media use and
civic/political engagement. The position offers opportunities for both
conference presentations and scholarly publication. The appointment is two
years (full-time) with a potential for renewal and is based at Mills
College in Oakland, CA. The appointment will begin March 1, 2011 and end
July 1, 2012 with potential for renewal.

The Civic Engagement Research Group at Mills College (CERG), located in
the School of Education, provides a research base that informs the design
of policies and programs that promote the development of citizens for an
effective, just, and humane democratic society.



Mills College is a nationally respected independent liberal arts college
for women with graduate programs for both women and men. Located on 135
lush acres in the foothills of Oakland, California, the College enrolls
approximately 960 undergraduate women and 635 graduate women and men.

Representative Duties


The responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Fellow include the following:



·       Conceptualize and carry out statistical analyses of
cross-sectional and panel survey data from MYPP’s nationally
representative sample of youth engagement with new media and participatory
politics,

·       Prepare analytic/integrative summaries of findings

·       Collaborate with the research team on analysis of findings

·       Prepare literature reviews of digital media/new media and
civic/political engagement literatures for journal articles and other
reports and publications

·       Collaborate on the development of a new research paradigm for
understanding civic, public and political life in the digital age

·       Collaborate on research design for projects coming out of the
network including developing scales, survey instruments, and data
collection strategies

·       Collaborate with the research team on write-up of findings for
publications

·       Participate in conference presentations

·      Perform related duties as needed.


Minimum Requirements

·       Ph.D. in Political Science, Education, Communications, Sociology,
or Psychology

·       Advanced knowledge of statistical methods and theory

·       Expertise with Stata, R, or an equivalent statistical analysis
software

·       A solid grounding in the digital media and civic/political
engagement literatures –especially as related to youth

·       Capacity to work collaboratively and exercise independent
judgment, based on understanding of overall goals of the research and
relevant theory

·      Ability to exhibit strong customer service orientation for all
levels of College constituencies and members of the public
·      Ability to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective
working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment



SALARY: $54,000-$65,000 commensurate with experience, plus an excellent
benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance/403b
retirement plan, 22 days vacation plus 13 paid holidays and 12 sick days
annually. Staff also receives free admission to campus events, use of the
pool, fitness center, and tennis courts.  Tuition remission is also
available after an introductory period.
