[xmca] Bilingual minds

Whatever happened to interest in the work of A.A. Leontiev on second
language learning. SOMEONE in Moscow was able to create the most amazing
bilinguals (Russian/English) i have ever met.

Below is an interesting article by a woman whose name is the same as the
town my mother in law came from..... besides, she's real interesting and on
our current topic.

Speaking two languages can be handy when traveling abroad, applying for
jobs, or working with international colleagues. There is increasing evidence
that bilingualism has additional benefits in the domain of cognition.
Specifically,
individuals who speak two languages may have an advantage over those who
speak only one language when it comes to certain nonverbal cognitive tasks:
While monolinguals engage specific networks for nonverbal tasks, bilinguals
make more extensive use of those same networks to effectively switch between
their two language systems. The enhanced ability of those systems may
benefit other, non-language-related forms of cognitive processing.
Preliminary evidence also suggests that bilingualism may have a protective
effect against Alzheimer's. The differences between monolinguals and
bilinguals have important implications for clinical practice (e.g., accurate
interpretation of bilinguals' test scores) and policy (e.g., foreign
language immersion programs in schools).
