The Communications & Marketing Program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is
seeking a full-time project leader for a new three-year, NSF-funded project
to create interactive online tools to help the public identify birds.
Duties include:

   - Lead an interdisciplinary team of four staff at the Cornell Lab
   Ornithology and collaborators at Northeastern University and the Institute
   for Learning Innovation to develop "Crowd ID," a suite of online tools
   including Merlin (which uses machine learning algorithms and crowd sourced
   data to help people identify birds in real-time), as well as photo-based
   bird ID games and social networking features to enhance learning about bird
   identification.
   - Responsible for all aspects of project management.
   - Collaborate with internal stakeholders to establish scope, requirements
   and timelines.
   - Develop strategy of integrating Crowd ID tools with social networks,
   websites, and other outreach channels.
   - Communicate goals and needs to the team.
   - Foster collaboration and synergies.
   - Ensure on-time completion of deliverables.
   - Lead meetings.
   - Solicit and organize input from internal teams, advisory panel, and
   external users.
   - Maintain the project within budget.
   - Develop Crowd ID tools in line with goals related to informal science
   education, including collaboration with evaluators to test the effectiveness
   of Crowd ID at helping people learn about birds, improve their observational
   skills, and increase participation in citizen science.
   - The project leader is a key part of the Cornell Lab's Webby
   Award-winning All About Birds team (www.allaboutbirds.org).
   - The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is world-renowned for its online
   citizen-science and educational projects; authoritative online information
   about birds; audio, video, and photographic assets; and interactive websites
   reaching 6 million people each year.

 Full-time, annual term appointment.   Applicants to provide cover letter,

Required Qualifications:

   - Bachelor's degree with strong background (in course work or equivalent
   experience) related to birds, web communications, informal science
   education, management, or other relevant field.
   - Proven skills in managing complex projects and leading teams.
   - Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
   - Ability to translate stakeholder requirements into technical
   requirements.
   - Familiarity and proficiency with Web 2.0 standards and social
   networking principles and applications.
   - Strong interest in the process of bird identification.
   - Proven ability to meet deadlines and to work in a team environment
   requiring cooperation between colleagues and flexibility with different
   styles and approaches.

  Preferred Qualifications:

   - Bird-identification skills and an understanding of the sociology of
   bird-watching.
   - Experience in creating or managing social networking communities.
   - Experience in developing websites.
   - Experience in developing informal science education projects.
   - Successful experience in working with collaborators off-site.
