Faculty Search –MacArthur Chair in Digital Media and Learning

The Faculty of UCLA’s Department of Education located within the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS) is seeking to expand its expertise and influence in the field of digital media and learning sciences. The Faculty invites applications for a newly endowed MacArthur Chair in Digital Media and Learning at the rank of Full Professor.

We seek candidates with a distinguished record of research and teaching abilities in digital media and a commitment to digital learning environments. The Faculty seeks a scholar who transcends traditional divisions and invites applications from candidates with active research agendas within one or more of the following areas: (i) the design of digital learning environments and/or new media pedagogies (ii) innovative frameworks for the analysis, critique and evaluation of digital media in the lives and schooling of youth/young adults and/or (iii) critical techno-literacy, participatory culture, and the use of new media to promote social justice. Candidates with expertise in a broad range of new media (e.g. games, immersive online environments, mobile devices) would be welcomed.

The candidate’s research agenda should fit with the focus and mission of GSE&IS’s Department of Education. We are a community of learning and action inspired by the principles of social justice and individual responsibility and by an ethic of caring. As researchers, teachers, and agenda setters in learning and information fields, the community promotes transformative practice and scholarship. As part of a public research university in a large urban setting, GSE&IS recognizes its commitment to the public trust. In addition, UCLA’s location near the world’s center of media and new media production allows for exciting research and industry collaborations.

The Department of Education has as one of its priorities the recruitment of faculty who can bridge academic and professional programs. The Department has a nationally recognized doctoral program (Ph.D.), a professional doctoral program (Ed.D. degree) in Educational Leadership as well as professional masters programs (Ed.M. degree) in Teacher Education, Principal Leadership, and Student Affairs in Higher Education. The Department also offers an undergraduate minor. As is the case for all Education Faculty, some of the appointee’s teaching responsibilities, according to interest and expertise, will be for the professional programs and/or undergraduate minor. Information about the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies is available at http://www.gseis.ucla.edu.

QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree in Education or a related field, a distinguished record of research, scholarly publication, and teaching; commitment to teaching and mentoring students; and capacity to provide intellectual leadership to the field and our department. Finally, the Department values candidates who can add to the diversity of the faculty.
