Re: [xmca] RE:Texas erasing Cesar Chavez & Hispanics from school books

That's not going to happen.

I've been following this, and posting at
http://curricublog.wordpress.com/category/education/texas-education/

If you get to that archive list, and scroll down to the August 18 post "new Lowe standards for Texas Social Studies," you will see what was being said then on eliminating Chavez, Thurgood Marshall, and others.

Anyone interested might want to look at some of the more recent postings in that archive. The most recent (right now) is on Tiger Woods and the purposes of Social Studies.

Audio of the most recent hearings (November, both clips and complete session) are posted here:
https://tw-curricuwiki.wikispaces.com/TX_SBOE_Social_Studies_2009_November
including an appearance by Texas State Representative Norma Chavez (El Paso) on behalf of the Hispanic Caucus of the Texas legislature, which would override the SBOE and strip them of their powers if they went through with this.

But the talk about removing Cesar Chavez is a diversion. There's a very different, and more interesting game actually going on, which most members of the Board are clueless about. This includes angles that will be of interest to xmca. I'll try to post more later.

I thought you might be interested in this United Farm Workers e-activism

The UFW needs your help to stop the Texas state Board of Education from
erasing Cesar Chavez and all Hispanic historical figures from public school
text books. Since Texas is such a major textbook purchaser, such a move
could have a nationwide impact.

This Wednesday, Jan. 13, the state board will take a preliminary vote to
adopt new standards for social studies texts. These new standards would
eliminate all Hispanics since the conquest of Mexico in the early 16th
Century.Cesar Chavez, arguably the most important Hispanic civil rights
leader of the 20th Century, is among the historical figures to be
eliminated. One of Lowe?s so called "experts" said that Chavez "lacks the
stature?and contributions" and should not be "held up to our children as
someone worthy of emulation."
