I imagine our churches send a lot of people to anti-war marches, too. Peace, and even pacifism, are pretty widespread christian ideals. Though note that while peace is nearly universal, pacifism is largely rejected by evangelicals who pride themselves on their patriotism. I do not recall patriotism being a virtue endorsed by JC however.

As to your questions, the first can only be answered rather speculatively. I suspect critical thinking is not a widespread goal or value, because the common view of it here is that it means negative thinking, being against things. Even skepticism is not a virtue. Americans only like positive virtues. It would more likely be moderate Moslem parents who would like to inoculate their children against radical fundamentalism (which obviously did not work in the case of the recent air bomber, though I don't know whether his elite British schools did much with critical thinking -- as they are supposed to do).

Regarding the question of whether they really believe natural selection is unproven, that has been investigated by survey and interview research, and one of my former students showed me some of the results in connection with a paper he was writing. So, yes, they really don't believe in Darwinian evolution. In fact, I think that a majority of all Americans harbor serious doubts about whether it is proven, or just a theory/hypothesis.

The problem here being what these terms mean to people. "Natural Selection" probably means nothing to anyone more than a few weeks out of the classroom in which it might have been defined (and in most schools they just conveniently never get around to the topic before the end of the course). If it means anything is it just a synonym for "Evolution", and Evolution means humans descended from monkeys, and maybe that dinosaurs are older than the Bible says is possible. 

Most of my students and students I have encountered in many science classes of many teachers I have observed believe that something is either a fact or a theory, and Evolution is generally counted as a theory, which means it is not a fact.

I personally don't accept the so-called neo-Darwinian synthesis as the full explanation for either contemporary biological diversity or the appearance of new biological forms and functions over geological timescales. Not because of any religious beliefs, but because I've seen very persuasive arguments by very serious scientists, and because I know where the bodies are buried in the evidence for the synthesis. Critical thinking, I suppose.

Most of my science education colleagues, however, have an almost religious faith in Evolution and react rather badly when I suggest that good critical thinking requires us to (a) point out the weaknesses in the standard theory, and (b) support discussion of alternatives, even Intelligent Design (which, while it was made up as a less-obviously-christian version of Creationism to avoid certain legal problems, incorporates a number of principles of argumentation which are considered quite acceptable in the field of cosmology, but -- illogically, I think -- unacceptable in biology).

Critical thinking is easy when the object is someone else's belief, and we assume the outcome will support our own. But that is also its least productive use.
