For the Department of Communication and Information Sciences the Tilburg University is looking for three enthusiastic and competent colleagues;

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION SCIENCES

Context of the vacancies
The positions arise out of the increasing number of students in the academic programme CIW –especially in the tracks ‘Business Communication and Digital Media’ (BDM) and ‘Text and Communication’ (TC) – and also of the growing success in acquiring external funding. With the new staff members we intend to manage the growing number of students by bringing in new angles in the CIW bachelor and master programme. At the same time, we aim at reinforcing research in the Department, in the areas of discourse, cognition, business communication, communication technology and in promising interfaces between them. The positions are not a priori allocated to specific areas. Instead, we invite candidates with the following areas of interest and expertise (and their interplay) to apply for the positions. • discourse (e.g. document design, multimodality, text analysis, stylistics, pragmatics) • communication (non verbal aspects, emotion, learning, training, business communication) • web science (text analytics, user interface design, discourse modeling, opinion mining, subjectivity/sentiment classification, stylometrics).

Tasks
The tasks cover research, teaching and management (Associate professor: 35% research and 65% teaching and management; tenure track positions: 50% research and 50% teaching). • Teaching and developing courses (in Dutch or English) in the Bachelor and (Research) Master programme of Communication and Information Sciences (CIW), particularly in the tracks BDM and TC. •          Supervising Bachelor and Master Theses.
• Carrying out managerial and organizational tasks, on the level of the department and the faculty.
•          Initiatives in acquiring external research funds.
Requirements
Candidates must hold a PhD in one of the following disciplines: discourse studies, linguistics, communication and information science, cognitive science, business communication, psychology, sociology or another relevant discipline.

Recommended (depending on the profile):
• Experience in developing and teaching Bachelor and (Research) Master courses. • Familiarity with new media as a means of communication, a didactic tool and a research tool. • Sound knowledge of and experience with quantitative methods and research techniques, and statistical data analysis. • Expertise in setting up, conducting, and analysing experiments (preferably eyetracking) with the use of software tools (such as E-Prime, NESU, Presentation, Experiment Builder, etc.) • Relevant research experience, as evidenced through a significant publication record in high-ranking (international) journals. • Associate Professor candidates have more academic experience, i.e., an excellent publication record, recognition as excellent researcher in the field, successful record in acquiring project grants and contract research, academic management skills.

Terms of employment

• The associate professor candidate will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as “universitair hoofddocent” in salary scale 13 with a starting salary of minimally € 4.428,-- gross per month on a fulltime basis. The selected candidate will start on a two-year contract, to be concluded by an evaluation. Upon a positive outcome of the evaluation, the candidate will be offered a permanent (tenured) position.

• The tenure track positions will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as “universitair docent” in salary scale 11 with a starting salary of € 3.195,-- gross per month on a fulltime basis, entailing a 5 year period, devided into 2 separate contracts, starting with a two-year contract. Upon a positive evaluation of teaching activities within the first 2 years, it leads to an extension of the tenure track with 3 more years. The division of tasks is 50% teaching and 50% research. After 4 years of employment, a dual evaluation will take place on quality of the candidate (teaching and research) and on the financial long term plan of the faculty and the department. Upon a positive outcome of the dual evaluation, the candidate will be offered a permanent position. The research and teaching expectations to be met by the appointed candidate during the tenure track will be discussed and will become an integral part of the contract.

Doctoral Scholarship in Faculty of Education

Monash University: Doctoral scholarship for research into sociocultural adjustment, well-being and learning outcomes among International Students in higher education

A PhD scholarship is available as part of an innovative program of research examining social and cultural adjustment, well-being, and student learning outcomes in higher education. The longitudinal project focuses on students from different cultural backgrounds who come to study at Monash College as part of their pathway into Monash University degree programs. Key factors to be studied include adaptive vs. maladaptive study behaviours, learning engagement and motivation, learning strategies, academic performance, connectedness, belonging and wellbeing. The successful applicant will be mentored as part of an active research team engaged in a strong program of research. There will be opportunities for the successful applicant to present at research conferences and to contribute to publication outputs. The scholarship will be a stipend of $20,427 per annum (tax free) for 3 years full time and is awarded through the Faculty of Education at Monash University,Melbourne, Victoria. There may be an opportunity to supplement this stipend by undertaking some tutoring, and/or research assistant work dependent on skills background. Applicants must be eligible to enrol in the PhD program in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. Essential Criteria: A first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent in education, psychology or a related field. Applicants should be willing to develop skills in survey research through training and independent study. The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal, organisational, and written communication skills.

Desirable Criteria: Interest in the topic areas of the research project and a desire to develop skills in survey and/or mixed methods research.

Positions Vacant: Applied Cognitive-Development Lab at CRPP

Research Assistants/Associate

The successful applicants will join an energetic and productive research team working under the direction of Dr. Kerry Lee. Our efforts are currently focused on the cognitive underpinnings of children's mathematical proficiency. We also conduct a variety of studies on the development of working memory, executive functioning, and the interface between learning, cognition, and pedagogy. Duties for assistants include material preparation, participant recruitment, liaison with participating schools, project management, data collection, analysis, and report preparation. In addition to data collection, duties for associates include advanced data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant preparation.
Research Studentships
Students with good honours degree in psychology are invited to apply for the 2010 intake of research students. Successful candidates will read for their master or doctoral degree under the direction of Dr. Kerry Lee. Please contact us if you have interests in issues related to working memory, executive functioning, or mathematical problem solving. Scholarships are available for exceptional students.

Requirements
Essential: Honours degree in psychology.
Students who are finishing their 4th year training are encouraged to apply. For research associates, candidates are expected to have a master degree by research (in cognitive- developmental or educational psychology) and teaching experience.

Desirable:
1. A desire to publish and to pursue graduate study in psychology 2. Experience in conducting experiments and administering psychological tests 3. Interests in cognitive-development and factors influencing academic performance
4.         Training in experimental and developmental psychology
5. Excellent communication (verbal and written English) and inter-personal skills
6.         Ability to work in a team environment
7. Competent in multivariate analysis. For the research associate, candidates should have experience and training in structural equation modeling
8.         Ability to speak Mandarin, Malay, or Tamil

Closing Date
Review of applicants will commence immediately and will continue until suitable candidates are found. We are hoping to have the research associate in place by 1st January, 2010 and the research assistant(s) in place by the middle of 2010.
