[xmca] Salaried doctoral program places in Finland (also in CHAT)



Dear XMCA colleagues, please read the following. Notice that our CRADLE Center in Helsinki is offering four doctoral student positions, each for 4 years, fully funded (12 months a year). The entire program is run in English. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

THE FINNISH GRADUATE SCHOOL IN EDUCATION AND LEARNING (FiGSEL) is
seeking candidates for 16 doctoral student positions

The graduate school is financed by the Finnish Ministry of Education and
the Academy of Finland. The duration of the graduate school is four
years, starting January 1st, 2010. Individual periods of doctoral
student positions are determined on the basis of the stage of PhD
research and the allowance available to the graduate school. The
positions are placed at several universities in Finland. The salary will be based on the job demands chart for teaching and research staff and on
the system of personal work performance in the new salary system for
universities.

Graduate students can study in all the Finnish universities, which are
involved to FiGSEL. The graduate school is a multidisciplinary
consortium that is divided into the following four doctoral programmes:

The descriptions of the doctoral programmes and more information of the
graduate school are avail-able at http://www.edu.utu.fi/kasva/

The applicants may apply to no more than two doctoral programmes. They
are asked to indicate the first- and second-preference programme in the
application. In addition, the application must indicate the starting
date desired by the applicant and the period for which she or he is
applying for graduate positions.

Documents required for the application are:
- research plan (max. 5 pages)
- description of how the research plan relates to the doctoral program
applied to and possibly to existing research projects
- letter of motivation explaining why the applicant wants to pursue a
researcher career (starters ) or the current phase of dissertation
- officially certified copy of the diploma of a higher university degree at Master's level in the do main relevant to the doctoral program in the
original language and an official translation in English
- when applicable: a registration certificate from the Finnish
university where the applicant has been admitted to study for a doctoral
degree in a field relevant to the doctoral programme
- list of qualifications (curriculum vitae) including work experience
- list of publications
- International applicants whose native language is not English are
required to submit certification of the language skills in one of the
following ways:

a) by passing the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a
minimum score of 575 on the paperbased test (PBT) or 90 on the
internetbased test (IBT).
b) by passing the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS)
with an overall band score of 6.5 and no individual score below 5.5.
c) by passing the Cambridge ESOL’s Certificate of Proficiency in English
(CPE) with pass grade A, B or C.
d) by passing the Cambridge ESOL’s Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
with pass grades A, B, or C.
e) by passing the test for the National Certificate of Language
Proficiency in English set by the Finnish National Board of Education
with an average score of 5 (new proficiency scale, lev-els 16;
corresponding to level 7 on the original proficiency scale, levels 19).
f) with a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree done in English in
Australia, Canada, Ire-land, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the
United States.
g) with studies conducted in English (min. 20 ECTS) at a Finnish University.


Application with attachments must be sent by 30 September 2009 at 3.45
pm (local time in Finland):

- in three signed copies to the Doctoral Programmes that the applicant
is applying to (to addresses listed above)
 AND
- in electronic formats by email to the Doctoral Programmes that the
applicant is applying to (to emails listed above) and ulla.kiviaho@utu.fi

Possible letters of recommendation in English, Finnish or Swedish must
be sent by the referee to the Doctoral Programme (see addresses above,
please). The selection decision will be announced by letter to the
successful applicants by the end of November, 2009.
