This put me in mind of the demonstration I use when I want to talk about the
dual/simultaneous materiality and ideality of language (which I think
extends to all forms of artifact mediation).  I begin by asking what is
material about language. In what sense is
it mediating between me and my students as we discuss matters with each
other. The question evokes consternation because
the students understand what I am saying -- at some level they know the
meaning of the words gramatically spoken (sort of!)--
but they "hear through" the language, which has become transparent to them.
THen, without pause, i continue speaking in
Russian. They can hear me just fine, but all they can get is the material
aspects of language..... the meaning has disappeared. And where did it come
from in the first place? Through joint a shared history of joint mediated
activity through THAT system of artifacts. This is made especially clear
when one or two of the students answer a question embedded in my continuing
talk ..... those
who share THAT history of mediated action with me.
