RE: [xmca] CHAT and Action Research: Special Issue

is link to an an article by Jaakko Virkkunen dealing with one problematic
issue of action research/Scandinavian version:

 

how does the new emerge in developmental projects involving only the
practitioners?

 

 if scientists/reseaerchers are banned from participating? 

In most of the examples in Gustavsen's project LOM in Sweden the researchers
seemed to be just conference secretaries. 

In a few cases there were so competent and forceful practitioners in the
work place that they could change work practices - but only in their own
fairly small unit.

 

How can new scientific concepts be used and be connected to the everyday
concepts?

What about sustainability of change and role of management?

 

These are some of the issues Jaakko discusses.

 

And yes, there is a difference between Mode 1 and Mode 2 research. In the
latter the researcher is not just passive observer of human behavior.

Sorry,

 

There is a scientific method but no scientist, at least the way we
traditionally define scientist.  There is often a facilitator, because the
type of dialogue that is needed for a community approach to problem solving
often times does not come naturally.  At the same time, the
facilitator/scientist is supposed to dissolve in to the community before the
actual recognition of the problem occurs.  It is in many ways the same role
the teacher plays in the democratic classroom.

Perhaps I have not read properly,or read through the lines accurately,  but
there is a version of AR that excludes scientists entirely: this is
transformational (critical?) AR in education in which teachers alone decide
what their problems are and how other problems emerge as they are addressing
the first. "Experts" are not welcome, because they are not "insiders".
