The OED gives "discussion/debate" as the early, now obsolete defintion of
dissertation, Pauil. The second definition is interesting too:

A spoken or written discourse upon or treatment of a subject, in which it is
discussed at length; a treatise, sermon, or the like; =

DISCOURSE</cgi/crossref?query_type=word&queryword=dissertation&first=1&max_to_show=10&single=1&sort_type=alpha&xrefword=discourse&ps=n.>

</cgi/crossref?query_type=word&queryword=dissertation&first=1&max_to_show=10&single=1&sort_type=alpha&xrefword=discourse&ps=n.>
In California we often use the term, "thesis" for what is here referred to
as a dissertation. That invites, of course, an interpretation of the
practice that includes an anti-thesis and search for a superceding new
concept, but in my experience, the latter never happens.

Variations from country to country are also interesting. I was an official
"opponent" at Yrjo Engestrom's thesis defense. It was my job to
ask difficult questions so that Yrjo could convince a skeptical and
generally unsupportive faculty that he could justify what he had written
which he did really well. In front of a large audience. By contrast, at
UCSD, very few people attend a thesis defense and the discussion
is usually relatively cursory, although sometimes really interesting.

Lots of genre variations.
